Some Other Fool’s Cause

It was in the springtime the call came to war

But Tommy cared nothing for some other fool’s cause

Still the money was good for a working man’s pay

So to pay for the rent my dear Tom went away.

So it’s off to the war he has gone

Lord bring him home safely I pray

For he’s gone off to war for some other fool’s cause

To fight and to kill for his pay

It was in the summer they went overseas

So I put on a brave smile though my heart yearned to grieve

But my Tommy was smiling as they bore him away

All the young men together bound for lands far away

So it’s off to the war he has gone

Lord bring him home safely I pray

For he’s gone off to war for some other fool’s cause

To fight and to kill for his pay

It was in the autumn, or so they said

He fell in battle – my Tommy was dead

At the hands of some bastard whose face he ne’er saw

My poor dear Tommy I’ll see no more

So now it is winter, the house bare and cold

In his grave my dear Tommy will never grow old

Still the killing and dying still goes on the same

And women will weep for lovers ne’er seen again.

So it’s off to the wars they have gone

Lord bring them home safely we pray

For they’ve gone off to war for some other fool’s cause

To fight and to die for their pay

Yes, it’s off to the wars they have gone

Lord bring them home safely we pray

For they’ve gone off to war for some other fool’s cause

To fight and to die for their pay
